Even the writers (Mia Chung and Debora Cahn) from the Netflix mega-hit The Diplomat have their central character recognize the deep importance of a metaphor.

Context:

On an episode of The Ambassador the U.S. Ambassador to Britain character is talking with the U.S. Sec. of State character, attempting to help the SecState understand that it may be vital to believe a bit of intelligence info that is not completely confirmed; the outcome of the decision could lead to a war or no-war stance between the USA and Iran.
